Springtime means it is time for your pet’s check-up and heartworm test! Your pet’s exam allows us to make sure your pet has a clean bill of health while also making sure you and your pet are fully prepared for the warmer weather. Since the warmer weather means more time spent outdoors it means that your pet is exposed to fleas, osquitoes and other parasites. Therefore, it is also very important to make sure that you are fully stocked up on flea & tick prevention as well as heartworm prevention for your pet!
Heartworms are preventable parasites that are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. A heartworm test and year around prevention will protect your pet against these deadly parasites. If a mosquito bites a pet with heartworms then the pet becomes a carrier and can spread it to any pet not on heartworm prevention. The microfilaria or baby larvae are transmitted through your pet’s body and begin taking up residence in the blood vessels of your pet’s heart and lungs. Once the adult worms are present, heartworm treatment procedures are necessary which are costly and can take over 3 months to complete, thus prevention is essential!
By keeping your pet on a heartworm preventative it prevents the baby heartworm larvae from being able to take up residence and turn into full grown heartworms. The most common form of heartworm prevention is a once-a-month tablet given orally. While there are other options, please discuss them with one of our veterinarians to figure out the best option for you and your pet.
