Cardiac Exam
Pets, just like humans, get heart disease or have heart conditions such as a heart murmur. We will recommend a cardiac evaluation if your dog or cat is exhibiting symptoms of cardiac disease. A cardiac exam will give us much needed information regarding your pet’s heart condition. Symptoms of cardiac issues in dogs and cats can include:
- Coughing
- Difficulty breathing
- Rapid, shallow breathing
- Abdominal distention
- Exercise intolerance
- Weakness or collapse
- Grey or blue gums
- Irregular heart beat or “whooshing” sound identified during wellness exam
If your pet has been diagnosed with a heart murmur it is important to always watch for these signs. If your pet exhibits one more of these symptoms, contact us right away.
The Cardiac Exam
The veterinary cardiology exam at Christensen Animal Hospital includes a thorough physical exam and bloodwork. The cardiology exam will include necessary tests to pinpoint your pet’s heart condition. These tests may include an echocardiogram, EKG, digital x-rays, and blood pressure measurement. After our review of these tests, we will discuss with you your pet’s heart condition and treatment options. The sooner we identify your pet’s heart problem, the sooner treatment begins and the sooner your pet’s quality of life improves. There are many treatment options available for pets with heart disease, meaning your pet can lead a normal, healthy life with a heart condition.
