Laparoscopic Spay and Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Pet Surgery in Wilmette IL

While many surgical procedures may be accomplished with traditional means, laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures reduce pain in your pet’s post operative period, and get your pet back to normal function quickly.

Laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery is a modern surgical technique, in which 2 or 3 small incisions are made to allow visualization and manipulation of organs and other anatomical structures.  One incision allows entry of a small camera or laparoscope to view the required structure, while the other small incision allows entry of specialized surgical instrumentation.  By comparison, conventional surgical approaches rely on an “open” abdomen for visual and surgical manipulation.  There are a myriad of benefits in making two or three 5 to 10 mm incisions for laparoscopic surgery versus a much larger, traditional incision.

Laparoscopic Surgery Benefits Include:

  • Small incisions, which reduce pain and post-operative recovery time
  • Less pain means less pain medication, hospital time, and recovery
  • Reduced risk of infections due to intra-operative exposure of abdominal contents
  • Less bleeding equals faster recovery

Faster Healing, Less Pain, Happier Pets in Wilmette, IL

Whenever possible we aim to devise the least invasive surgical plan for your pet.  We use scopes for everything including spays, organ biopsy, cytstoscopy (bladder stone removal, tumor resection), and much, much more.  We find that our patients recovery rapidly and with drastically reduced pain when compared with traditional surgery.  Often, we find that the hardest part is keeping our patients from running around right after surgery because they feel so good.

If your pet is not a patient of Christensen Animal Hospital, please consider a surgical consultation as we often partner with other veterinarians for surgical referral.  Once surgery is complete, most post operative care and rechecks may be scheduled with your existing family veterinarian.
